The Centre for Human Rights Reporting at SOAS: participating in the MA Investigative and Human Rights Journalism Programme

The Centre for Human Rights Reporting (CHRR) is proud to be an active participant in the MA Investigative and Human Rights Journalism programme at SOAS University of London. This dynamic course brings together the rigour of investigative journalism with the ethical frameworks and sensitivities needed for reporting on human rights abuses across the world.

Led by Iain Overton, an award-winning journalist and Executive Director of Action on Armed Violence, the programme equips students with the investigative research skills necessary to unearth hidden stories and challenge entrenched narratives. It also trains participants to navigate the many challenges of this demanding field — from the risks faced by journalists working in hostile environments to the ethical considerations and funding difficulties inherent in exposing wrongdoing.

The MA Global Journalism programme, and this pathway in particular, are distinguished by a strong commitment to amplifying marginalised voices and addressing global power imbalances. Students engage deeply with the Global South perspective, exploring how decolonised and feminist approaches can reshape journalism for the better. Modules such as ‘Conflict and Human Rights Reporting’ and ‘Collaborative Research Project: Human Rights Investigation’ allow students to hone their craft while working alongside expert mentors and award-winning reporters.

We at the Centre for Human Rights Reporting believe that this kind of work is fundamental to upholding human rights and democratic accountability. We are therefore delighted to contribute to this programme and support students as they develop the skills to tell stories that challenge the status quo and shine a light on injustices around the world.
